Statements during the Anni Murder Case Trial
Preyen Dewani was a detective for his brother Shrien Dewani during the trial of Anni’s murder from 2010 to 2014. Preyen was the first person Shrien Dewani called after his taxi hijacking in South Africa. Until then, Shrien was supported emotionally and supported by Preyen Dewani as the detective of the murder case.

During the court hearing, Preyen was caught making insulting remarks about South Africans on tape when he spoke to Anni Dewani’s parents. This tape was secretly recorded by Sneha Mashru (Anni’s cousin) who hid the tape recorder in her jacket during the conversation between Preyen Dewani and Anni’s family. It is clear after listening to the conversation that Preyen Dewani tried to clear his view by making inflammatory comments about South Africans and convincing Anni’s family that Shrien was not involved in Anni’s murder. He said,

In one of Preyen Dewani’s statements, he raised the question that there was no life policy involved in Anni Dewani’s name, so there was no motive for murder by Shrien. He asked,
Why do you have a big wedding, with everything going on, why, why you, no life policy. You tell me – what’s in it for Shrien there?”
It was rumored then that Dewani’s family would benefit from an insurance policy after Anni Dewani’s death. However, Preyen Dewani denied all the allegations and immediately offered a large amount of money in the name of the Hindocha family. Preyen also explained that his family did not experience any financial crisis and their company was running smoothly. He narrated,

- Preyen was the person who helped Shrien Dewani in arranging Shrien’s engagement with Anni in Paris in May 2010.
- Preyen was the first person informed by Capetown police about Anni Dewani’s murder on 13 November 2010. Preyen Dewani was in regular contact with Capetown police, who investigated the case after Anni was kidnapped alone on 13 November 2010.
