Prince Harry Lands Major Payday As He Settles Mirror Group Phone Hacking Suit

The Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry, has secured another financial victory over his phone hacking suit against the Mirror Group Newspapers (MGN).

The two sides recently reached a settlement, guaranteeing Duke around $500,000 in damages in addition to the earlier $180,000 ordered by the court.

follow Deadline, London’s High Court has heard that MGN, which publishes The Daily Mirror, has agreed to pay additional compensation to Harry over the phone hacking case he brought against them. The reported amount is approximately $500,000, with additional costs to be assessed as the case concludes.

The latest settlement concerns the alleged unlawful intrusion into his life in 115 articles, not including the 33 articles examined over the course of the case. This additional set of articles may potentially lead to another trial if agreement is not reached.

It comes after a court ruled in December that the publication had illegally hacked Duke’s phone to gather information for their article about him.

At the time, the court ruled that 15 of the 33 stories examined had been created with the help of “widespread and common” phone hacking. As a result, Prince Harry was awarded approximately $180,000 in damages.

In a statement to the press outside court, Harry’s representative, David Sherbourne, reiterated the court’s previous ruling on the hacking used on the Mirror Group to obtain information.

He said, per BBC, “Everything we say happened at Mirror Group actually happened, and indeed much worse as the court decided in its very harsh judgment. In light of all this, we call once again for the authorities to uphold the rule of law and prove that no one is above it.”

Sherbourne also called out former Daily Mirror editor Piers Morgan, doubling down on the judge’s statement that he was “perfectly” aware of “what was going on.”

“His contempt for the court’s decision and his continued attacks since then show why it is so important to get a clear and detailed judgement,” the representative said of Morgan, who has repeatedly denied knowing the hacking took place at the organization.

Sherbourne then concluded, saying that Harry would not relent in his quest to see her “to the end.”

Meanwhile, MGN has issued a public apology to Harry, adding that they are “delighted” to resolve the case.

“We welcome the December judgment which gives businesses the clarity they need to move forward from events that took place years ago,” read a statement from the organisation, per Deadline.

The statement continued, “Where historical wrongs have occurred, we apologize unconditionally, have taken full responsibility, and paid compensation. We are pleased to have reached this agreement, which gives our business more clarity to move forward than the events that occurred years ago and for which we have apologized.”

It wasn’t all wins for Harry in his case against the press. He previously suffered a loss in his libel suit against the publisher Daily Mail, Associated Press Limited.

Harry has claimed that an article written by the news outlet in February 2022 suggested that he had “inappropriately and cynically attempted to manipulate and mislead public opinion.” The Duke of Sussex also felt the piece was “an attack on his honesty and integrity.”

In court, ANL’s lawyers have argued that the article only expressed “honest opinion” and in no way put Harry’s reputation in serious jeopardy.” The judge in the case at the time agreed with their claim and ordered Duke to pay $62,000 to the publisher in legal fees.

Then, Harry’s legal team filed a cease-and-desist notice hours before the deadline to submit a list of documents ahead of a possible trial.
