Prince Harry Says He Felt ‘Forced’ To Quit Royal Role Amid Security Legal Battle

Prince Harry has been open about his decision to step back from his royal role and leave the country with his wife and children.

The Duke of Sussex, through his lawyer, said he “felt compelled to step down from this role and leave the country in 2020.” The claim was made during a court session in his suit against the Home Office, a government organization that falls under the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (Ravec).

Ravec has previously decided to reduce protective measures for Harry and his family to a “case by case” basis, which the former senior royal believes could jeopardize his family’s safety.

Prince Harry’s court case against the Home Office drops fresh surprises over his decision to step down from his royal duties in 2020, according to Daily Mail.

In a written witness statement, the former senior royal said he “felt compelled” to take the decision and did so with “sadness”.

The statement, however, did not reveal further details about his decision at the time but focused on why he felt the February 2020 decision by Ravec to reduce his publicly funded security was “unlawful and unfair.”

Harry’s statement read, “The UK is my home. The UK is central to my children’s heritage and a place where I want them to feel at home just as much as where they currently live in the US. That cannot happen if it is not possible to keep them safe when they are on UK soil.”

It continued, “I can’t put my wife in danger like that and, based on my experience in life, I refuse to put myself in danger either.”

Duke Lawyers Say Ravec Failed to Conduct Risk Analysis

Although most of the proceedings were not open to the public, Harry’s stance on the matter was no secret.

One of the duke’s lawyers, Shaheed Fatima KC, previously claimed that Ravec had not carried out a risk analysis and fully assessed the impact of a “successful attack” on Harry. He also said that his client had been “isolated” and treated “poorly” without “good reason” for such actions.

Meanwhile, Sir James Eadie KC, representing the committee, argued that it was Ravec’s right to opt for a “more reserved, targeted assessment” of Harry’s safety. He also said that doing so was not an act of treating Harry badly.

The date of a decision on Harry’s legal action against the Home Office remains unknown, although it is expected to be made in the coming weeks.

Harry’s suit against the Home Office was not the only one he was involved in. He now has several other lawsuits against British tabloid publishers, according to New York Times.

In this lawsuit, the duke claims that he and his inner circle illegally accessed their voicemails through prohibited methods from 1996 to 2011. In addition, Harry claims that one of the tabloids illegally obtained other personal information, including records the medicine.

One of the legal filings also asserted that the prince suffered great distress and created distrust, even among his closest friends, amid the whole drama caused by seeing his private information in the media.

Aside from his legal issues, recent reports claim that Prince Harry and Meghan’s relationship with King Charles could be on the mend, per Page Six.

It happened after the two contacted the king to wish him a happy birthday after conspicuously absenting himself from the actual royal celebration.

While it is unclear what they discussed and how long it lasted, reports claim that the conversation was heated and heartfelt. It is said to have caused positive changes that may bear more fruit in the future.

As well as Harry and Meghan speaking to the King, their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, also sent their grandfather happy birthday wishes. They did so via a pre-recorded video in which they were seen singing “Happy Birthday.”
