A flight from Israel to Russia had to be diverted Sunday – and still faces riots at the next airport where it landed – when pro-Palestinian groups stormed the facility trying to attack Jewish leaflets, reports said.
A flight initially bound for Makhachkala International Airport in the predominantly Muslim Russian Republic of Dagestan was diverted after dozens of people waving Palestinian flags took over the facility after learning of the flight from Tel Aviv, according to the Moscow Times.
The plane eventually landed at a nearby airport, which could also have been attacked by mobs, with harrowing footage showing a group of people jumping a fence onto the runway to try and get to the plane.
A video posted to social media showed airport staff warning passengers to stay on board as the facility was raided when the jet landed at 7:17pm local time.
Footage also shows mobs stopping cars and travelers at the airport and allegedly checking their passports to see if they are Jewish.
Some protesters were seen holding signs that read, “Child killers have no place in Dagestan” and “We are against Jewish refugees.”

The mob allegedly forced some tourists at the airport to denounce Israel on camera and agree that Jewish refugees are not welcome to live in Dagestan.
Despite the chaos, Israel’s Foreign Ministry said there were no Israelis or Jews on the flight from Tel Aviv.
But other Jewish passengers at the airport at the time were rounded up by security and scheduled to be transferred to Moscow “as soon as possible,” the Jerusalem Post said.
All flights to and from Makhachkala were temporarily suspended due to a security breach, according to Russia’s civil aviation agency.

The drama unfolded after several channels on Telegram broadcast calls on residents of Dagestan, which has an 83% Muslim population, to riot at the airport and wipe out Jewish passengers, according to Medizona, an independent Russian news channel.
Russia’s Investigative Committee, which investigates major crimes in Dagestan, said on Sunday that it had opened a criminal investigation into the disturbing incident, citing “planned mass chaos,” a crime punishable by up to 15 years in prison.
Local Muslim leaders at The Coordination Center for Muslims of the North Caucasus condemned the violence and called on residents not to respond to calls for violence against Jews spread online.

Over the weekend, mobs entered a hotel in the region and searched Israelis after rumors that “Jewish refugees” were staying there, Medizona reported.
The desperate situation of the Jewish refugees is reminiscent of MS St. Louis, a ship that carried more than 900 Jews who were displaced during the Holocaust and refused entry to the US before landing in Cuba in 1939.
The recent rise in antisemitism has come since Israel declared war on Hamas after the terrorist group killed more than 1,400 people in the Jewish state on Oct. 7.

US House Speaker Mike Johnson announced Sunday that the Republican-led chamber is expected to pass a $14.5 billion Israel aid bill this week.
“We will move a stand-alone Israel funding bill this week in the House,” Johnson said on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures, noting that it does not include aid for Ukraine’s fight against Russia. “We believe that is a pressing and urgent need.”
