A protester was in critical condition Friday after setting himself on fire outside the Israeli consulate in Atlanta, authorities said.
A security guard who tried to intervene was also injured.
The Palestinian flag found at the scene was part of the protest, Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said at a press conference.
He added that investigators do not believe there was a link to terrorism and that no consular staff were ever in danger.
“We don’t see any threat here,” he said. “We believe it was an extreme act of political protest that took place.”
Authorities have not released the protesters’ names, ages or genders.
The man was set up outside a building in a downtown neighborhood Friday afternoon and used gasoline as an accelerant, Atlanta Fire Chief Roderick Smith said.

Demonstrations have been widespread and tensions in the US have risen as the death toll rises in the Israel-Hamas war.
The conflict began after an October 7 attack by Hamas and other terrorists, which killed about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, in southern Israel and captured about 240.

More than 13,300 Palestinians have been killed as a result of Israeli attacks, according to the Ministry of Health in Hamas-controlled Gaza.
A week-long ceasefire that saw the exchange of dozens of hostages held by Hamas for dozens of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel gave way Friday morning to the resumption of fighting between Israel and Hamas.
