Joanna Gaines is officially a mom to a high school graduate!
With an upcoming season of “Fixer Upper” filming and a new hotel in the works, Gaines has a lot to be excited about. However, they were pushed aside as the family focused on celebrating their firstborn and son, Drake, as he graduated from high school over the weekend. For her part, Joanna posted videos highlighting her childhood moments on social media.
Joanna Gaines Is Surprised By Her Son Drake’s Fast Maturity
Even though the day her son will leave the nest to keep her closer than ever, Joanna can’t help but complain about how big her baby boy is. Taking to Instagram, the emotional mother of five uploaded a clip she set to Tracy Lawrence’s “Time Marches On” to highlight some of her fondest memories of Drake.
These memories, captured on camera, printed, and laid out on a brown surface, feature the now 18-year-old as an adorable baby holding a toy monkey, wearing a cowboy outfit and playing baseball.

The bittersweet outing also shows young Drake running into his mother’s arms, receiving his diploma at his high school graduation, and posing with his beloved family after the ceremony. The video wraps up with a brief look at his graduation cap, perfectly placed on the tip of the surface.
“It seems like just yesterday we were cheering her on as she took her first steps…but last weekend, as she walked across the stage to receive her high school diploma (!!), we cheered her on as she took her first steps. stepped into a world beyond what he knew. We are so proud of you, Drake. ❤️ #16,” he wrote in the caption, referring to his baseball jersey number.
He followed up with a second update, focusing on Drake hugging his baby brother Crew as he waited in his seat to receive his diploma. The Magnolia Network founder captioned the post, “Melt. me. Heart. ❤️.”
Despite the joy behind both posts, Joanne decided to lock the comments section, leaving fans to like the first post 73k times and the second almost 75k times. The editor-in-chief’s celebratory update comes as she and her husband, Chip, have to adjust to changes in Drake’s life.
One such change occurred when the young adult had to get his driver’s license, which his parents were initially “excited about”. However, the excitement was very short-lived for his mother, as his father recalled PEOPLE in 2021:
“Then we got this boy his license, and the first morning he went to drive, Jo rolled his eyes. He was just devastated and wanted no part. He wants to hire him as a driver!”

Later in 2022, Joanna reflected on her son becoming a college student in an essay, writing, “In the grand scheme of heartbreaks, this one comes with a lot of gratitude and excitement … However, my first child will move away, and our family dynamic will change because of it, which can feel like losing itself.”
The Kansas-Born Beauty Checked THIS Experience Off Her Bucket List
Last month, The Blast observed that the doting mother came full circle when she went to where her mother, Nan Stevens, grew up. She showcased the experience in a video she shared with her 13.7 million Instagram followers, including a snap of her dad Jerry, walking the streets of Seoul, Korea, with her husband and children.
He was also seen trying on a traditional hanbok with his mother before the family sat down to watch a baseball game together. The crew makes a cute cameo, showing cultural bows while wearing traditional hanbok.
Although lengthy, the reality star’s caption touched on the importance of the trip, which has been her mother’s lifelong dream for her and her family. It reads in sections:
“We met a family we had only seen pictures of. We saw the cherry blossoms in full bloom. We walked the same path my mother did as a young girl and again as a young woman with my father’s hand in hers.”
The recording is set to The Cranberries’ 1993 song, Dreams” and has received nearly 290k likes since it was posted on April 12.
