A new video shows the moment a Connecticut Police Officer was able to save a woman from a bridge and prevent her from hurting herself.
According to posts on social media, on Monday, November 27, troopers responded to several 911 calls about a woman on the side of the Baldwin Bridge, which stands about 100 feet above the Connecticut River.
Once on the scene, troopers reported that they found a woman who had climbed from a pedestrian sidewalk over a metal safety fence and was sitting on a five-inch ledge.
In the video, officers say Sgt. Matthew Belz can be seen and heard talking calmly to the woman as Sgt. Ashley Harkins quickly scaled the safety fence, placing herself in peril on the narrow bank above the flowing river to help save the woman.
The two sergeants managed to get the woman to move her hands to the fence and then climb up to the feet of Sgt. Harkins so responding troopers could help pull him to safety, over the fence and into an ambulance for immediate treatment.
“We commend the quick and decisive action of Sgt. Harkins and Sgt. Belz in saving the woman’s life. Thanks to DEEP Colonel Chris Lewis and State Troopers from Troop F who also assisted at the scene,” the department said.
