Punk Legend Patti Smith Celebrates Her Birthday By Giving Gratitude Back To Fans

Patti Smith, punk legend and poet, may have taught generations of listeners how to spell ‘GLORI-A’ since the 1970s.

Today, however, Smith’s fans might spell out two specific words in his honor: ‘happy birthday.’

A piece of Smith’s legacy as a writer and singer began to be realized in the late 1960s and early 1970s when he explored the art scene in New York City. Smith’s songwriting would emerge on the NYC music scene by 1975 with the release of his seminal LP, “Horses.” Ultimately hailed as one of the most important albums of the era and as an influence on many musicians who came after, “Horses” will give music listeners a glimpse into Smith’s deep connection to songwriting and poetry.

Nearly five decades after the release of “Horses,” Smith’s career is still going strong. His memoir, “Just Kids,” detailing Smith’s early days in New York City and delving into his relationship with the late artist, Robert Mapplethorpe, has become one of the best-known rock memoirs of the past decade.

Smith, who was married to MC5’s Fred ‘Sonic’ Smith from 1980 until his death in 1994, was a frequent user of Instagram, captioning her posts in a poetic style heavily favoring the ‘back’ key. The “Because The Night” singer penned a birthday-themed note to her fans to commemorate her big day.

When Smith isn’t detailing her life on Instagram through short, punchy captions, she’s often working on a book. Smith has been writing volumes of poetry since the seventies and still writes and publishes them regularly. In addition to “Just Kids,” Smith released another memoir, “M Train,” in 2015.

Smith’s latest book focuses on photos from her everyday life, a concept similar to what her followers regularly see on Instagram.

She recently sat down with Harper’s Bazaar to discuss her writing process and how “A Book Of Days” came to be.

“I have survived [because] I want to live. Even in our troubled world… I want to stay alive,” Smith told the publication. “I want to breathe. I want to do my job.”

Smith Celebrates His Birthday With Gratitude For The Countless Wishes He Received From Fans

On Friday, Smith commemorated her birthday by posting a selfie on Instagram, but the message she wanted to convey to her followers went beyond herself.

In the photo, Smith poses in front of a bookshelf, looking pensive.

He wrote,

“This is

thanks to everyone

I sent it back

to all of you in similar form.”

Smith’s comment section is currently filled with over a thousand requests, including from artists and musicians. Flea, from The Red Hot Chili Peppers, wrote, “happy birthday Patti!”

One fan wrote, “I may write here many things, but nothing can express how special you are. every year I pray for you on this day, because your life, your thoughts and your art are something that make our experience in the world this is easier. “we’re all in this together,” what an honor! much love to you, patti lee! rock tonight at brooklyn steel i’ll be there in spirit. it’s time to celebrate!”
