A puppy that was thrown out of a car window and abandoned last week near a North Carolina animal shelter has been rescued — and the man behind the sickening act has been arrested.
Despite being found “malnourished and loaded with fleas and parasites” and suffering from two small fractures and minor abrasions, the dog is safe and expected to make a full recovery, PAWS Bryson City animal shelter announced Tuesday.
“Thank you to everyone who has supported us through all of this. We are so grateful to have brought him in,” the shelter said.
The puppy – who has since been named Apollo – was taken in by PAWS and will spend the next few weeks living there until he has recovered enough to be put up for adoption.
PAWS and the local community spent days combing through some of the brush surrounding the shelter after the man – whose identity has not been released – threw Apollo out of his window.
A harrowing surveillance video shows the abuser arguing with others in his SUV before suddenly opening his car door and slamming it shut.
He then grabbed and threw Apollo out the window with such force that the puppy flipped over, barreling towards the ground first.

The harrowing ordeal took place outside the gates of PAWS, which was open for business at the time.
“The doors of our shelter are open,” PAWS Director Beth Stroud told USA Today. “He chose not to even enter through the gate. He never called.”
Stroud did not know the motive behind the man’s upsetting actions, but said he and his staff would be more than willing to help him and Apollo.

The man should have dropped the dog off at the shelter’s door, just a few steps from where he tossed the dog, he said.
“The way she disposed of these puppies was wrong and against the law,” Stroud said.
Apollo escapes after a traumatic toss, prompting the shelter to launch a massive rescue mission, as well as hunt down the puppy’s abuser.

The man was quickly identified and charged with animal cruelty and abandonment, according to Stroud.
He is scheduled to appear in court later this month.
