Rajesh Das is an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the 1989 batch of Tamil Nadu cadre who was sentenced to three years in prison in June 2023 for sexually harassing a fellow young female IPS officer.

Rajesh Das was born on Tuesday, 31 December 1963 (age 59 years; in 2022) in Odisha (then – Orissa), India. His zodiac sign is Capricorn. He went on to study for a Masters in Arts and a Masters in Philosophy before pursuing a career in the Indian Police Service (IPS). He passed the UPSC CSE examination in 1989 and was appointed as IPS Officer of Tamil Nadu cadre on 19 August 1990.

He has held many important posts throughout his career such as Commandant in II Battalion of Tamil Nadu Special Police, Avadi, SP in Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board, Chennai, SP in Thiruvallur district, Inspector General of Police in Coastal Security Group, Tamil Nadu, IG of Police, South Zone, TN, Commissioner of Police, Chennai Suburban Police, Inspector General of Police, Coast Guard Group, Tamil Nadu, Additional Director General of Police – SJ & HR in 2017, DGP Enforcement in 2020 and Special Director General of Police Tamil Nadu (Law and Order) in 2021 before he was suspended for allegedly harassing a young female IPS Officer in February 2021.
Controversy
Harassing Young Female IPS Officers
In February 2021, he was a member of the security team for the then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Edappadi K. Palaniswami of the AIADMK party. On 21 February 2021, when he was appointed as Special DGP and was traveling to Ulundurpet District in his official car, he harassed a young lady IPS Officer who was traveling with him in his car. The victim filed an FIR against her at the CBCID-North under Villupuram district for offenses under Sections 354A(2), 341, 506(1) of the IPC and Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act, 1998. Later, a committee was constituted to investigate the charge which finds that the charge is true. The victim also included the name of Superintendent of Police, Chengalpet, D Kannan, for preventing him from filing a complaint. After two years of trial, on 16 June 2023, Villupuram Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) M Pushparani found Rajesh Das guilty of sexual harassment and convicted him under the Tamil Nadu Harassment of Women (Amendment) Act, 2002 as well. He was given 2 fines of Rs 10,000 each and two concurrent sentences of three years. Later, Rajesh was granted bail to file an appeal.
Facts/Trivia
- Allegedly, he was close to AIADMK CM Edappadi K. Palaniswami who believed that Rajesh would help him win the elections; however, DMK chief MK Stalin has announced a strict investigation against Rajesh while campaigning for the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
- During his tenure as DGP, he was associated with many social work organizations.
