Rajkumari Kaul was born on 13 September 1925 in the holy city Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, India. Though her roots belong to Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. She was a Brahmin by caste and belonged to Kashmiri pandit clan. She was called ‘Bibi’ by her loved ones. She was a loyal supporter of Bharatiya Janata Party and is said to have an untagged relationship with Atal Bihari Vajpayee from her college days.
At 88, she left the world to rest in peace on 3 May 2014. She was admitted in AIIMS hospital on 2 May 2018 following a cardiac arrest which she could not survive.

Rajkumari and Atal Ji were madly in love with each other. They once exchanged a love letter to each other but he could not get her letter from the book she left it in.
She wanted to marry Atal Ji but she could not due to the opposition from her family. Though they belong to the same caste, her family considered themselves as the superior which was enough reason for her parents to disagree on their marriage.
She was born in a renowned dynastic family to Govind Narain Haksar and Manmohini Haksar. Padma Rani Haksar was her Step-mother. Her father got a job at Scindia’s family education department in Madhya Pradesh. Chand Narain Haksar was her Half-brother.
Rajkumari like an ideal obedient daughter chose her family over her love. After the 1947 riots, her family took her to Delhi, and later, she got married to B N Kaul who was a teacher by profession.
She had two daughters. Nandita Nanda and Namita Bhattacharya.
According to some sources Namita Bhattacharya is considered as the alleged daughter of Rajkumari Kaul and Atal Bihari Vajpayee (Source: Indian Express).
It is said that Rajkumari Kaul and her husband, Brij Mohan lived with Atal Bihari in the same house for more than 50 years as extended family members.
Education
She lived in old Delhi before moving to Madhya Pradesh along with her family. She was a graduate. She met Atal Bihari Vajpayee during her college days in Maharani Laxmi Bai Government College of Excellence, Gwalior (earlier known as Victoria College).
Facts
- Rajkumari Kaul was a hardcore vegan.
- She was a second cousin to Indira Gandhi which might not be known to Atal Bihari Vajpayee at the time he met Rajkumari Kaul.
- It is believed that her father’s job at Scindia family became an accidental reason for Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s and Rajkumari’s association.
