He grew up in Chembur, Bombay. He did his schooling from Our Lady of Perpetual Succor High School in Mumbai. Born in a family with a musical background, Sampath developed a keen interest in Carnatic music at a very young age. While in school, he studied Carnatic music for eight years. After completing his schooling, Sampath enrolled himself in Mumbai’s RA Podar College of Commerce and Economics to pursue a course in Commerce. Ram joined a rock band during his college days where he played the keyboard. At the age of 16, Sampath began visiting music studios in search of opportunities to compose. In 1994, he got the opportunity to compose music for the Femina Miss India 1994 pageant.

Ram Sampath met Sona Mohapatra (singer) in 2002, while Mohapatra was working as a brand manager at Marico Limited, a consumer goods company. They were introduced to each other by film director Ram Madhvani. The two tied the knot on January 16, 2005.

Ram Sampath started his career by composing jingles for TV commercials. He has worked on commercial music for brands like Airtel, Docomo, Thums Up, Pepsi, and The Times of India.

He has also composed music for films such as Let’s Talk (2002), Khakee (2004), and Luv Ka The End (2011).

Sampath received huge popularity for composing the music for the hit song ‘Bhaag DK Bose’ from the movie “Delhi Belly” (2011). In 2008, he collaborated with Australian rock band INXS to record Indian versions of their songs “God’s Top Ten,” “Devil’s Party,” and “Afterglow.” He has also performed in many stage shows.

Controversy

In 2008, Sampath filed a case against the producers of the film Krazzy 4 (2008) for copying his music. Later, the Bombay High Court ruled that two songs from the film including the title track had been plagiarized. The songs copied the catchphrase from a Sony Ericsson commercial composed by Sampath. The court ordered a postponement of the film’s release after which the case was settled out of court. The producers of the film paid Sampath Rs. 2 million, and then the film was released with songs.
