Ranu Mondal was born on Saturday, 5 November 1960 (age 62 years; in 2022) in Krishnanagar, West Bengal. He spent most of his childhood at his paternal aunt’s house in Ranaghat, West Bengal, as his parents had died when he was only six months old. His zodiac sign is Scorpio. Ranu has a passion for music since her childhood and she has listened to the songs of legendary Indian singers like Mohammad Rafi, Mukesh, and Lata Mangeshkar. She got married at the age of 19 and moved to Mumbai with her husband to find work.

Ranu Mondal belongs to a Christian Family. His father, Aditya Kumar, is a hawker. Not much is known about his mother. She married her neighbour, Bablu Mondal (a cook) when she was 19 years old. He has a daughter, Elizabeth Sathi Roy and a son from Bablu Mondal. Bablu Mondal died in 2009. Ranu was married twice. She also has a son and a daughter from her second husband.

Career

Ranu Mondal started her career doing odd jobs in Mumbai. He then started singing for a club in Mumbai. Ranu left the job after some time, as her husband, Bablu, did not agree to the same. She returns to her hometown, Ranaghat, after the death of her ex-husband and lives there alone in poverty. Mondal started singing at the railway station in Ranaghat to earn a living. She came into limelight after a video featuring her singing the song “Ek Pyaar Ka Nagma Hai” went viral on social media.

Insulting Lata Mangeshkar

In February 2023, he was slammed by netizens for insulting Lata Mangeshkar in a video that went viral on social media. In the video, Ranu Mondal is heard referring to the legendary singer as “Lata Fata.” He said,

Yeh jo gaana ga rahi, yeh toh koi Lata Fata ka nahi hai. This is not Lata ji. The voice I sing is also good. It’s good, it’s good.”

The local Block Development Officer (BDO) of the Government of West Bengal congratulated him on 14th August 2019 as part of Kanyashree Divas celebrations of the Government of West Bengal. He also assured assistance from the government.

  • When Mondal appeared on the show “Superstar Singer,” the host of the show, Jai Bhanushali, asked him why he was singing at a railway station. But I also feel that imitation is not a reliable and durable companion to success.
