Symoné looks back at the first time she watched “The Cosby Show” and how she was convinced she had the potential to “do what Rudy did.” He went to audition for the role in “Ghost Dad,” and although he was not chosen because of his age, Cosby was impressed with his performance.

The actress was cast for a new role that suited her age and began a long acting career. Symoné’s mega-popularity comes with its fair share of lows, including highs. Like some other child stars, the actress dealt with a lot of pressure because of her public image, which was created at a young age.

One of Symoné’s more popular shows, “That’s So Raven,” was released in the early 2000s and is one of the few live-action programs to have a black female lead. The actor revealed that most series during that period featured black characters as “Black’s best friend,” so actors had to wait for the production of Mark Curry or Bill Cosby for the lead role.

Symoné refers to the almost non-existent diversity in the industry as “a form of racism.” He said per Insider, “I remember my dad saying, ‘I’m sending you out to audition for ‘young white male,’ ‘young white female.’ I send you for all things just so you can be seen because there are no roles for ‘young black girls.’”

The “Raven’s Home” actress admitted that even though there are more representatives on tv now, performers still face a lot of discrimination. Symoné mentioned “Stranger Things” Caleb McLaughlin and how the actor previously spoke about how racist fans are towards him.

Symoné came out as gay in 2013, shortly after the Supreme Court decided to expand same-sex marriage laws. The actress revealed that she blames the entire social climate for making her feel so uncomfortable that she couldn’t go out for years.

He admitted that he found out he was gay at the age of 12 and kept it to himself because of his career success. Symoné previously said that he felt it was not “sellable”, nor was the “Raven-Symoné brand”.

“At the time, I didn’t have a great lesbian role model with a positive response. People are fired, people are ostracized,” the actress told Insider. “In my head, it was: You stay in your shell until you leave the industry when you’re 45, 60 years old.”
