Ray made his big league debut in 1974 as a September call-up for Cincinnati. The standout pitcher played the entire 1975 and 1976 seasons with the triple-A Indianapolis Indians. The Reds won two World Series this season. When Knight took over as the “Big Red Machine” starting third baseman, he batted .232 with two home runs and 19 RBI. Additionally, on May 13, 1980, Knight rebounded from an 0-for-15 slump by honking twice in the fifth inning in a 15-4 win over the Mets. In 1980, he made his first All-Star appearance, hitting a single against Tommy John in his first at-bat. The great hit .259 in 1981, with six home runs and 34 RBI. Ray was traded to the Houston Astros for Cesar Cedeno on December 19, 1981.
