Real-life Grinch steals California family’s Christmas tree that was tied to car

How the Grinch stole a family’s Christmas tree.

A California family had their Christmas tree stolen from the top of their car in a brutal crime that mirrored the holiday’s classic plot.

Jesus and his wife had just bought a tree in San Mateo Friday afternoon and left it tied to the roof of their SUV in the parking lot while they ran errands on their way out, he told ABC7.

But when the Bay Area couple returned to their car, they were shocked to find their Christmas tree gone.

The real-life Grinch decided to grab the tree and run away, according to security footage obtained by a local station.

The video shows a white SUV pass Jesus’ car and then reverse and park the car next to him.

A man then stepped out of the white SUV and walked toward the couple’s vehicle, where he cut the ropes that tied the tree to the roof of their car one by one, according to the footage.

The Christmas tree rolled off the roof and the man caught it, carried it to the back of his own car and put it in the trunk, the clip showed.

He struggled to close the trunk of his car before finally closing it and driving away, according to the video.

San Mateo police told ABC7 they will be on the lookout for similar crimes as the holiday season approaches, but called the tree grazing a “unique case.”

“There are good-hearted people out there who are more than willing to help those who can’t afford a tree this time of year,” police added.

The suspect has not yet been identified.

A Christmas tree lot that sells the tree Jesus stole replaced it with a new one, according to the store.
