Four hunters killed the largest alligator in Mississippi history over the weekend, an 802.5-pound beast, measuring more than 14 feet long — and aptly dubbed “the stuff of nightmares.”
The prehistoric-looking animal was taken out Saturday in the Yazoo River on the second day of Mississippi’s alligator hunting season, according to Red Antler Processing on Facebook.
Don Woods, one of the four men who killed the giant gator, told the Clarion Ledger that he and his friends — all experienced alligator hunters — spotted the giant reptile in the river shortly after boarding their boat around 9 p.m.
“We know he’s wide,” Woods said. “His back is big. It’s like we’re following a jon boat.”

What the hunters didn’t know was that it would take them a “mentally exhausting” seven hours to transport the toothy monster onto their boat.
“We tied him eight or nine times, and he kept breaking free,” Woods said. “He would come down, sit down and then take off. He continued to go under the log. He knows what he’s doing. The crazy thing is that he lives in the same place.”
Woods told the outlet that the gators ended up breaking almost all of their rods and reels before finally tiring out after a night of wild thrashing.
A “nightmare” alligator was pulled out of the Yazoo River on the second day of the Mississippi alligator hunting season.
“He dictates everything we do. It’s exhausting, but your adrenaline is running so you don’t even realize it, Woods said.
The hunters finally managed to tackle the giant reptile before 4am, but they didn’t fully understand how big it was.
“We just knew we had a big alligator,” Woods said. “We were just amazed at how wide his back was and how big his head was. It’s real, to tell you the truth.
The size of the gator’s head alone is mind boggling.
The scaly predator ended up measuring 14 feet, 3 inches long and tipping the scales at 802.5 pounds, with a stomach girth of 66 inches, state wildlife officials reported.
“The stuff of nightmares!” a woman commented on Facebook.
The previous record for the largest alligator caught in Mississippi belonged to a 14-foot, 0.75-inch specimen weighing 766.5 pounds, harvested in 2017.
