Genzel received his Ph.D. in physics from the Universities of Freiburg and Bonn in 1978. Later that year, at the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy, he completed his Ph.D. thesis in radioastronomy. After that, he worked at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge. He was elected a Scientific Member of the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft in 1986. He carried out gravitational redshift studies with his research group. Reinhard Genzel discovered three flares at the center of the galaxy in 2018 and issued a report describing observations of the nearby neighborhood and their brightness bursts.
