Renato started playing soccer when he was eight years old. His club career began with local team Guias da Musgueira. He joined SL Benfica’s junior system in 2006. In 2006, he joined Portugal Sports Lisboa e Benfica. From 2006 to 2016, he was a member of Benfica’s youth squad. Renato was promoted to Benfica’s senior squad in 2015. On 30 October 2015, he made his senior squad debut, coming on in the 74th minute to replace Jonas in a 4–0 win against Tondela. On 4 December 2015, he scored his first goal for Benfica against Académica goalkeeper Trigueira, becoming the youngest Benfica player to score at home in the twenty-first century.
