He chose to become an actor from a young age. His family returned to the United States after several years in France.

Career
Rene launched his theater acting career after college. During the early stages of her career, she traveled back and forth between Los Angeles, California, and New York City to perform in several theater productions. He was instrumental in founding the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles, and the Brooklyn Academy of Music Repertory Company in New York. In 1969, he won a Tony Award for his performance as Sebastian Baye in the theater production of Coco.
In 1973, he was nominated for a Tony Award for his role in The Good Doctor. He made his film debut in 1970. His first film role was as Father Mulcahy in the 1970 film M*A*S*H. Since then, he has appeared in several successful films, including Police Academy 5: Assignment Miami Beach (1988) and The Patriot (2000), in which he portrayed the criminal Tony.
