Renee Rapp Admits She Has ‘A Lot Of Feelings’ About ‘Sex Lives Of College Girls’ Exit

A month after Reneé Rapp’s unexpected exit from Mindy Kaling’s HBO Max series “The Sex Lives of College Girls” was confirmed, Rapp is speaking out about her decision.

The 23-year-old actor has gained quite a fan following over the past two-and-a-half years, playing Leighton Murray on the comedy show for two seasons.

Unfortunately, Rapp will not be returning in the upcoming third season for undisclosed reasons; however, he has “a lot of feelings” about his decision, as he revealed in a recent interview.

In an exclusive chat with PEOPLE, the award-winning entertainer had a little to say about his withdrawal from “TSLOCG.” Anyway, he had more to say but couldn’t because of the SAG-AFTRA strike. “I have a feeling about it and what it means for the show and me and my music,” he told the magazine, adding:

“But I can’t comment on anything just because of SAG and the WGA strike. It forbids me to talk about it, but I have a lot of feelings about it.”

It was confirmed in July that Rapp would be leaving the HBO Max show as a regular but would appear in a few episodes periodically. The “Mean Girls” star also released a statement on X – previously called Twitter – preaching the gospel about her role as Leighton.

“College girl moved me to LA and introduced me to some of my favorite people,” she wrote. “2 and a half years later – it gave me all of you and this community.” Rapp later expressed his appreciation to the series creator, “Thank you, Mindy [Kaling]Justin [Noble]and everyone at Max for believing in me.”

Before concluding, he touched on how much playing Leighton had had on him, which was all positive.

“A lot of queer work is looked down upon – but playing Leighton has changed my life. I love who I am 10x more than I was before knowing him. I hope he gives you all a little of that too.

The Jimmy Award winner believes in the “little bit of representation” she gives viewers as a queer character even though the TV industry still has work to do.

Concluding the statement, she admitted that she wouldn’t be “half the person” she is without Leighton and her fans. She also wrote, “I’m so excited for this season, and I can’t wait for you to see what we have coming up for him and the girls.”

In the first two seasons of “TSLOCG,” Rapp played a rich student who explores and identifies with his sexuality as a queer at Essex College. He was cast alongside Pauline Chalamet, Amrit Kaur, and Alyah Chanelle Scott, who were his comrades and eventually friends during their freshman year of college.

The creators of the comedy production, including Kaling, seem to want only the best for the “Spring Awakening” star despite her exit. The “Never Have I Ever” producer used her Instagram Stories to cheer Rapp by reposting headlines about her vacation from news outlets along with encouraging notes.

It read, “We love @reneerapp so much and will be so sad to say goodbye, Leighton Murray! But we can’t wait to see our friends on tour!!.”

Although the two seem to be on good terms, Rapp reportedly hired a famous Hollywood lawyer to get him out of “TSLOCG” allegedly because he violated the agreement by announcing his music tour without permission from the creator.

The HBO Max Production Has Been Renewed For A Third Season

“TSLOCG” was renewed for a third season last December. However, the release date has not yet been announced. According to reports, it is most likely in November 2023, given that the first two seasons debuted in November 2021 and last November respectively.

No official plot or cast details have been revealed yet, but fans should expect Chalamet, Kaur, and Scott to star in the upcoming season.

As avid viewers remember, the second season ended with the friendship of the four main characters troubled and Kaur Bela’s character wanting to transfer school.

Elaborating on Bela’s decision, one of the show’s creators, Noble, revealed that he had “a lot to think about” in season 3 with his need to “start fresh somewhere else.”
