Despite a leadership crisis lingering in the House after former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) was ousted on Oct. 3, Mills used his ex-Army expertise to fly to Jordan on Tuesday, cross into Israel by land and escort his compatriots out.
“I feel like I’ll be back in time to vote too; I’m not going to miss that,” said Mills, who is supporting Jordan (R-Ohio) in the speaker’s race.
“God put me exactly where I should be, which is to help these people as much as I can.”

It was important to take action, Mills said, after he helped rescue Americans and allies left in Afghanistan by the Biden administration in the chaotic August 2021 retreat from Kabul.
“I’m really trying to do this from start to finish to make sure that they know, one, that they’re going to be taken care of and that they’re not left behind and not forgotten by their own government,” he said.
“I don’t care what district they’re from, whether they can vote for me, whether they’re Democrats or Republicans … these are Americans who want to go home.”

Hours after The Post published Prout’s story, Mills was on his way to meet him, crossing Jordan into Israel – a country he had never visited before – by taxi.
On Wednesday, Prout became the first of 32 Americans whom Mills brought out of Israel by coordinating with his contacts in the region – footing the bill for a bus to take the group to a hotel in Jordan, from where they could book flights home.
“I will be forever grateful to Congressman Mills for the way he saw my story and selflessly took action, actually getting involved in the war and personally moving me,” Prout told The Post on Thursday.

“While our administration has failed to put the American people first, he has shown the world what it means to be a true public servant who cares about his people.”
“He is a hero and a badass who saved many lives and our country is lucky to have him as a leader,” he added.
On Thursday, Mills brought 45 more Americans out of Israel, something he said he felt “blessed” to do.

“My question is if I, by myself, in a country I’ve never been to in my life, can go and coordinate and remove 77 Americans in two days, how will the entire power of the government and the president himself be united? The state hasn’t released a single one yet?” he told The Post.
Frustrated with the lack of action by the Biden administration and with the House still without a speaker, Mills has decided he must return to Washington and try to help more Americans from the Capitol.

“The thing I feel confident about is that we got 77 Americans safely out of Israel and back home – that was worth every member meeting I had.”
After National Security Council spokesman John Kirby announced Thursday that the US would begin chartering flights out of Israel for Americans there, Mills felt more confident that his mission would continue once he left.
Still, he said more work needed to be done to help others living in Israel as it waged its first declared war in 50 years — calling it a “joke” that the Biden administration chartered planes “only after the Americans stepped up and did this. Save them.” alone.”
