Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee urges Houston supporters to vote – on the wrong day

Houston, we have a problem.

Campaign ad for mayoral candidate Houston Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) is encouraging her supporters to go to the polls, but not on Election Day.

A graphic in Place 30 seconds told voters to cast their ballots “on or before Dec. 7” in Jackson Lee’s runoff race against Texas Democratic state Sen. Sen. John Whitmire, but the election is scheduled for Dec. 9.

Any potential voters who make it to the polls on Dec. 7 will not be able to cast their ballots, as Harris County’s 41 early voting centers closed on Dec. 5 and do not reopen until Election Day.

Jackson Lee’s campaign did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.

In a glittering campaign ad, the Democratic congressman touted spending “his entire career fighting for you.”

“From fighting to keep our children safe from guns when I was on the city council to my days in Congress, fighting to protect women’s reproductive freedom and to fund our police, schools and small businesses,” he said.

“Now, I am running to be your mayor. Because if we’re going to reduce crime, fix our streets, and bring good-paying jobs here, then Houston needs a champion willing to fight for what’s right. And I am.”

A veteran politician, Jackson Lee has spent 28 years in Congress representing the Lone Star State’s 18th Congressional District.

He is running for re-election to Congress in 2024 as well as for mayor of Houston. He announced his candidacy for mayor in March.

Jackson Lee advanced to the second round after receiving 35.6% of the vote in the November 7 election. Whitmire, the longest-serving member of the Texas state Senate, received 42.5% of the vote in a crowded 16-person field.

Jackson Lee, once dubbed the most brutal member of Congress by Washingtonian magazine, stepped down temporarily from his post as chairman of the House Judiciary subcommittee on criminal justice and the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation in 2019 after a former staffer filed a lawsuit alleging he was fired. by Jackson Lee after filing a sexual assault complaint against a Congressional Black Caucus Foundation supervisor.

The claim was dismissed in 2020.

Jackson Lee also came under fire in October, after he was filmed cursing and berating a member of staff.

In the leaked audio tape, Jackson Lee accused the assistant of not having a “brain” and he yelled several expletives at her for apparently handing documents to other staff members instead of taking them with her when she asked for them.
