Retired NYPD cop Alison Esposito can beat upstate Dem in key district: House GOP poll

Retired NYPD cop Alison Esposito has a real chance to take a battleground congressional seat for Republicans by unseating incumbent Democratic Rep. Pat Ryan next year, internal GOP poll claims.

Esposito, who is GOP gubernatorial candidate Lee Zeldin’s 2022 lieutenant governor running mate, announced his bid against the first-term incumbent in the Hudson Valley’s 18th Congressional District last month.

Prior to Esposito’s entry into the congressional race, a poll conducted by the Congressional Leadership Fund — a super PAC that supports the House GOP majority — found that the Republican nominee would tie Ryan 43% to 43%, with 13% undecided.

Forty-two percent of registered voters said it was time to elect someone new, while 36% supported Ryan’s re-election, with the remainder on the fence, according to the poll.

“New polling data shows that the favorable political environment for the GOP and weakness in Pat Ryan’s standing with voters points to a clear path to victory for 2024,” CLC Vice President Brock McCleary and research coordinator Jack Coogan said in an Aug. 7 memo about the poll. discovery.

“Voters are not impressed with Pat Ryan and are ready for an alternative,” the memo said.

The poll shows that President Biden, who will be at the top of the national Democratic Party poll, is unpopular in the 18th Congressional District, which includes Orange County and most of Dutchess and Ulster counties.

Only 43% of voters approve of Biden’s performance as president while 52% disapprove — including one in five Democrats, the poll showed.

New York’s Democratic governor Kathy Hochul is also unpopular in the district, with only 41% of voters viewing her favorably, the poll found.

The Congressional Leadership Fund Poll in the 18th district was conducted August 1–3 with 400 likely general election voters. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.89 percentage points.

The most powerful Member of Parliament in New York, Rep. Elise Stefanik, put her influence behind Esposito’s effort to unseat Ryan by establishing a joint fundraising committee and becoming Esposito’s first major supporter.

“As a former New York Police Officer of nearly twenty-five years, Alison Esposito is the type of person who runs toward disaster to save others, not away from it,” Stefanik told The Post. “We need more of those leaders in Washington. Alison is the only candidate in this race who has a strong record of putting the safety and security of New Yorkers first.

“He has what it takes to defeat far-left Democrat Pat Ryan,” the police added. “I have every confidence that Alison will bring her servant’s heart to Congress to prioritize the needs of hard-working Hudson Valley families.

“I am proud to fully support Alison and award her with E-PAC’s first endorsement of the 2024 cycle,” Stefanik said, referring to his own political action committee.

Esposito said he was glad that Stefanik and the House GOP made his race a priority.

“[Stefanik] has been a steadfast leader for New York and Republicans in Congress, and I look forward to working with him to increase our House Majority and bring true American values back to the Hudson Valley,” the candidate said in a statement. “Join Chairman Stefanik in bringing our wave of common sense to New York’s 18th Congressional District.”

Ryan, a former Ulster County executive and Army vet who served in Iraq, won the House seat by less than 4,000 votes against former GOP Assemblyman Colin Schmitt in 2022.

He made abortion rights a central issue during his successful bid, first winning a special election in the summer of 2022.

He won while other Democrats lost in a contested race in blue-leaning New York, including neighboring Senate Campaign Committee Chairman and former Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, who lost to Rep. First-term Republican Mike Lawler.

Republican seat picking in New York helped the GOP recapture the House majority.

“New Yorkers are fed up with the disastrous one-party rule of Pat Ryan and Democrats that has left families dealing with criminal records and an out-of-control immigration crisis,” said CLF Communications Director Courtney Parella. “Alison Esposito knows exactly what it takes to protect New York communities and keep families safe, and she will bring that expertise to Washington.”

A campaign spokesman for Ryan told The Post of the GOP poll’s findings, “We have enough right-wing extremists in Congress; what we need are patriots who will rise above partisanship to deliver for the families of the Hudson Valley.

“Hopefully the next vote is from MAGA [House Speaker] Mike Johnson’s Super PAC actually asked voters if they would support NYC transfer Alison Esposito who calls gun violence a ‘disorder,’ wants a national abortion ban with no exceptions for rape or incest, and stands with traitorous rebels trying to overthrow our democracy.” said the representative in a statement.
