Robert F. Kennedy Jr. officially announced on Monday that he will run for president in 2024 as an independent candidate, urging Americans to embrace “freedom from the reflex of needing to favor.”
The 69-year-old announced in Philadelphia that he was dropping out of the Democratic primary, where polls showed him trailing President Biden badly despite reaching 20% in some polls.
Launching an independent candidacy, environmental lawyers and anti-vaccination advocates say, will allow him to pursue an agenda that “prioritizes peace and diplomacy,” will “close loopholes that burden our budget” and “bail out debtors instead of banks.”
“I would ask people, what do you care?” sworn son of the late attorney general and senator from New York. “What do your children need? What does it feel like to be you? What do you like?”

The four siblings of RFK Jr. issued a statement blasting his continued candidacy, calling him “dangerous to our country.”
“Bobby may share the same name as our father, but he does not share the same values, vision or judgment,” sister Kerry Kennedy said on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Today’s announcement deeply saddens us. We condemn his candidacy and believe it is dangerous for our country.”
Political strategists from both parties told The Post over the weekend that Kennedy’s name recognition and unusual position could hurt next year’s presidential election by allowing him to steal votes from both major party candidates.

Accordingly, the Republican National Committee also released a statement attacking Kennedy following his announcement.
“Make no mistake – a Democrat in Independent clothing is still a Democrat,” RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said in a statement.
“RFK Jr. there’s no hiding from his record of supporting Hillary, supporting the Green New Deal, opposing the Keystone Pipeline, and praising the AOC tax hike – he’s your typical elitist liberal and voters won’t be fooled,” he added. “American families deserve smart leadership that will restore America’s energy independence, stop Bidenflation, secure our borders, and get our country back on track, which is why our Republican nominee will be the next President of the United States.”
Kennedy’s action means President Biden’s only major challenger for the Democratic nomination is self-help author Marianne Williamson.
Monday’s announcement comes days after left-wing professor Cornel West declared an independent run, opting not to pursue the Green Party nomination.
