‘RHOP’ Mia Thornton Unveils Sexual Assault Story At Victims’ Event

The latest episode of “Real Housewives of Potomac” hits too close to home for Mia Thornton at an event for rape victims.

The reality TV star had an emotional breakdown at a luncheon with co-star Karen Huger to Promote Victim Awareness Empowerment (PAVE). The organization, which empowers rape victims, “triggered” Thornton as a sexual assault survivor.

Mia Thornton Partially Blames Co-Star For Sexual Assault Incident

Thornton rushed to the bathroom in tears at the PAVE luncheon, with “RHOP” co-star Ashley Darby in front of her. With the latter offering a shoulder to cry on and an empathetic ear, the 39-year-old willingly shared his story of sexual assault for the first time.

She recalls an incident that happened when she was younger, noting that she was once with someone she believed to be a co-star. However, the night takes a turn for the worse when her old friend leaves her alone with the perpetrator. Weeping over the painful memories, Thornton said:

“My coping mechanism is to get the f–-k out when the s–-t is uncomfortable and, unfortunately, that day, I couldn’t get out. It’s just, like, ‘Why don’t you just go? Why did you put yourself in that situation?’”

The TV personality revealed the other side was her friend Jacqueline Blake, who she partly blamed for the incident. Despite her negative feelings toward the “RHOP” alum, she understands her anger has dissipated because Blake is innocent of leaving her. In Thornton’s words:

“I know I’m friends with him because of that, and it’s not fair to him. He didn’t know that would happen to me. She trusted her boyfriend.”

The Bravo star said her friend was “very scared” when she checked on him the day after the attack. However, it won’t be easy for him to forgive Blake, given the horrible things that happened in his absence. Addressing the matter in his confession, Thornton said:

“Because Jacqueline did leave me that night and because of the chain of events that happened once she left, I think all this time I wanted to forgive her … when I look back, I’ve probably always been mean to her because of her.”

The 39-year-old continued: “That’s not right. It’s just an emotional thing that I think a lot of people do. We didn’t realize it until we looked back and saw it.” Following her emotional confession in the bathroom, Darby embraces Thornton in a bear hug as she declares: “We’re going to be fine.”

Before Thornton’s tearful recollection, Darby had revealed she had been sexually assaulted “at the hands of a family member.” In his confession, he stated, “The saddest thing is knowing that it’s happening now. It is so prevalent. It’s heartbreaking.”

“You can only imagine the incredible amount of emotion I was going through and trying to figure out why,” she continued, referring to her husband, Gordon Thornton. “However, even with the terrible news, I felt an overwhelming amount of peace and energy instilled that allowed me to stay strong.”

The Bravo star admitted the news has changed her, but she’s staying positive while working with a “phenomenal team of physicians.” Thornton voiced his confidence as he thanked fans for their support, adding:

“I appreciate the outpouring of support. I haven’t been diagnosed yet, so please pray for me. I know God has a plan, and I know we are often challenged to remain humble that tomorrow is not promised and our days on this earth are numbered.”

Although she did not explain the stage of her cancer, she ended her message by advising others to cherish each day, writing: “A message from my heart. A gentle reminder to Live, Love, & Forgive as if today were your last.”
