Rian Johnson Seemingly Responds To Mark Hamill’s ‘The Last Jedi’ Criticism

Director Rian Johnson may have received praise for his film “Knives Out,” but the response to his Star Wars film, “The Last Jedi,” has been more polarizing.

The 2017 film is a follow-up to the 2015 film “The Force Awakens,” which revived the Star Wars sequel trilogy, and preceded the 2019 film “The Rise of Skywalker,” which concluded the nine-episode Skywalker Saga.

Many criticized the film and the direction of the characters including veteran actor Mark Hamill who strongly criticized the direction of his character, Luke Skywalker which he played since 1977.

The Direct points to a 2o19 interview that Mark Hamill did with Den of Geek, where he expressed his disappointment with Rian Johnson killing off his character in “The Last Jedi.” Not only that, but he was upset that JJ Abrams killed off Han Solo (Harrison Ford) in “The Force Awakens,” which meant that the two friends never really got to share the screen again.

“I just thought, ‘Luke is never going to see his best friend again.’ You look at it in a selfish way. I said that it’s a huge mistake that those three people aren’t going to get back together in some way,” Hamill said. “I guess I’m wrong, because nobody cares.”

“I have to say that I care, but it doesn’t seem to resonate with the larger audience,” he added. “Luke, Han, and Leia will never be together again, and I may never be able to work with Harrison again.”

He also said that he felt “distracted”, or cheated, by his return. “Then the second thing is they killed me,” he said at the time. “I thought: oh, okay, you should push my death to the last. That’s what I expect when I come back: no cameos and a trilogy contract.”

“Did I get any of that? Because as far as I’m concerned, the end of VII is really the beginning of VIII,” he pointed out. “I got a movie! They really hornswoggled me.”

Mark Hamill Admits He ‘Never Expected To Return’ To A Galaxy Far, Far Away

Mark Hamill did admit that the new trilogy is “all about the new generation, as it should be,” however, that doesn’t mean he’s not upset with how they’ve treated his character.

“Listen, I never expected to go back. We have a beginning, a middle, and an end,” he said referring to the original trilogy. “That’s what I’m saying: why mess with it? It’s not something that worries me, because it’s all about the new generation, as it should be.”

He also dug a little deeper into his frustration with the way Rian Johnson treated Luke Skywalker as the character, saying that, during the filming of “The Last Jedi.”

“They told me to walk with 3PO, not even admit it. I said: ‘I can’t do that!'” explained Mark. He said that Rian then said, “‘Okay, go and do whatever.’ So I went, and I did whatever. They said it in the script: ‘Forget the past, kill it if you have to,’ and they did a pretty good job!”

Rian Johnson Says He’s ‘More Proud’ of ‘The Last Jedi’ Almost Five Years Later

In an interview with Empire published on August 30, 2022, Rian Johnson said that he is “more proud” of his film almost five years after its release.

“I’m even more proud of it five years later. When I get up to hit, I really swing the ball,” he said. “I think it’s impossible for any of us to approach Star Wars without thinking about it as the myth we grew up with, and how that myth, that story, burns itself out and affects us.”

He also said that his “ultimate intention” for the film was “not to strip himself,” claiming instead that “the intention is to reach the fundamental and fundamental power of the myth. And ultimately I hope the film is an affirmation of the power of the Star Wars myth in our lives.”

Although Mark Hamill still doesn’t like the direction Luke Skywalker took in his film, Rian Johnson says that his film has a Luke Skywalker who actually embraces the mythos surrounding his character.

“The final image of the movie, to me, is not debunking the Luke Skywalker myth, they’re building it, and they’re embracing it,” Johnson explained. “They were the ones who really resisted the notion, ‘Throw away the past,’ and embraced what was really important about his myth and what would inspire future generations.”

“So for me, the process of undressing is always for the sake of getting something important that really matters,” he added.
