“Was I told that I would never have a chance to play a black man?” asked Richard Dreyfuss about the new diversity rules in Hollywood.
Richard Dreyfuss Wants Artist Freedom

The veteran actor, who has been in the business for over 30 years, is having trouble adjusting to a life where people do things to get hurt. He criticized the diversity and admissions standards of the Academy of Movement Arts and Sciences.
The resemblance made him want to “puke.” Dreyfuss told the truth on PBS’s “Firing Line With Margaret Hoover.” He covers several topics, including politics, education, and some of his moments in the industry.
But when it came to the Academy Awards, Dreyfuss was furious! “It’s an art. As an artist, no one should tell me that I must surrender to the latest moral idea. What are we at stake?” he said when asked about the new diversity entry.
Dreyfuss’ comments came off as if he was unconcerned with the feelings of all the “diverse” people who were offended by his clumsy remarks. “Do we risk hurting people’s feelings? You can’t legislate that,” he told Hoover.
Let Live; Life Says, Richard Dreyfuss

The actor is adamant that there is no split. “You have to let life be life. I’m sorry, I don’t think there is a minority or a majority in this country that needs to be catered to like that.”
The rules Dreyfuss tried to avoid were implemented in 2020 during the pandemic. The rules focus on expanding diversity on screen and in representative positions such as department heads that can give the industry access to those minorities to speak out.
Dreyfuss’s comment was as if he didn’t want to hear it. He also used Laurence Oliver’s role as blackface Othello for example because he is not tone deaf enough.
“He plays a black man brilliantly. Was I told that I would never have a chance to play a black man?” he asked seriously. “Has anyone else been told they can’t play [in] ‘Merchant of Venice’? If they are not Jewish. Are we crazy?”
Dreyfuss was so fired up that he slammed the academy for the action. “This is very humbling. It is very inconsiderate and treats people like children.”
Richard Dreyfuss Sees a Bunch of Cowards

Dreyfuss starred in films such as American graffiti and Mr. Holland’s Opus, where he plays the father of a child who falls into one or more categories. His son in the movie is deaf! One of the rare times that sign language can be seen on the screen at that time.
After playing such a role, Dreyfuss believes putting minorities in the spotlight through new regulations is not brave.
“I think we are cowards. Republicans send their children to school hoping and praying that their children will return. Republicans and Democrats send their kids to school immediately, pray for their kids to come back, Democrats,” he explained with a pointless reference.
Art is art, though, man.
