Richard began his career as a theater performer. In 1973, he made his Broadway debut in David Storey’s The Changing Room. He has several regional theaters besides Broadway. Later, he was drawn to television and film. In 1974, he made his television debut as George Bushmill in the television series All in the Family for one episode only. Clifford Ainsley appeared in Hot Steamy Baltimore a year later. That same year, he made his film debut as Lockyer’s Aide in Whiffs.
During that time, he also appeared as Nick Lobo in Rhoda. However, his involvement in the series was too short, appearing in only a few episodes. In 1976, he made his television debut as Max Duggin in the film Having Babies. The plot revolves around four couples who use the Lamaze technique to have children.
