Career
Ritu was brought up in a middle-class Jatt family in Haryana, India. Becoming a pilot was his childhood dream but it was not an easy journey for him. He struggles to break out of the stereotypes of the society he lives in and strives to build his dreams. He grew up in a society where his relatives thought that he should get married before he got an education but his parents played the role of his biggest support who worked hard to send him to school. Speaking of his interests, he said
I have never been a desk person and am very good at Maths and Science. I never wanted to go into engineering, but a friend’s suggestion to become a pilot got me thinking. I went to Arizona in the US for pilot training. Not that I dreamed of becoming a pilot, but when I started flying, it turned into a passion.”
The Haryanvi Jatt girl broke all stereotypes and applied for a pilot training program at an institution in the US. After applying for training, he waited for eight months to gain admission to the flight school on board. Belonging to a conservative family, her parents were uncomfortable sending their daughter alone in the middle of the world. Managing the money for his course was another major difficulty for his family. Considering the situation, Ritu asks her father to spend the money he saved for her marriage on her education, instead promising to make them proud one day.
I am good in studies and also in motor skills. The main thing is societal pressure. I had to convince my father a lot for my training. It was the first time in my family that a girl from my family traveled abroad. It was a difficult decision for my parents to make. “
The pilot’s mother, after completing her training returned to India and started applying for jobs. Currently the aviation industry in India is going through a recession phase and he cannot find a job for the next two years. He also lost his mother to a brain hemorrhage during his lifetime and his family is still living on loans. To support the family financially, he started doing a part-time job in Gurgaon which paid him almost Rs 12000. Later, he went to Ahmedabad for a full-time job which paid him Rs 25000. While doing full-time work, he also studied for almost 6 hours a day to get a job as a pilot in an airline. During an interview, he recounted his struggle, and said,
I decided to do a job for Rs 12k and used to ride my karizma bike from Gurgaon to Delhi everyday. I’ve always been a tomboy type personality. Later, I went to Ahmedabad for another job which paid me around 25k. The flight scenario is getting better and there are few vacancies. My daily routine is very busy. After doing all the work, I study from 9pm to 3am. Then sleep and wake up in between study and then go to my work. I can’t hang out with my coworkers.”
After going through stress and a life full of struggles for almost a year, he finally got an offer to join as a co-pilot from a leading airline in India. A life-changing moment in his life was that he was the only individual from his training bach to be offered a job in three different airlines. He chose to join Indigo and was appointed co-pilot for the Boeing 373 Airbus. He flew about 60 flights a month for almost four years and was eventually promoted to the rank of Captain. Talking about his passion for flying, he said,
I love flying planes, flying in the sky, landing planes, watching the weather. Every flight has different challenges and I like to take on those challenges, and I like my profession”, he said happily while talking about his profession. “I like to fly. Flying challenges you; you think about your procedures, the way you do things, and push yourself to show the best of yourself.”
Ritu Rathee gained attention after she started appearing in her husband Gaurav Taneja’s daily vlogs on his YouTube channel ‘Flying Beast.’ It is one of the most popular vlogging channels in India with more than 7 million subscribers. Gaurav runs three YouTube channels ‘FitMuscle TV,’ for fitness and health related content, ‘Flying Beast,’ a daily vlog channel and ‘Rasbhari Ke Papa’ for travel vlogging.
I’ve been in his videos where I’m shown doing normal homework, and with the feedback they realize that people enjoy our conversation and chemistry. This leads to the Flying Beast.”
Ritu Rathee Taneja is making her first television appearance with her husband Gaurav in 2022 with the StarPlus reality television show ‘Smart Jodi.’ The show features ten real-life celebrity couples who will compete against each other in this fun game show to win the title of ‘Smart Jodi.’ Other celebrity couples on the show are Neil Bhatt and Aishwarya Sharma Bhatt, Arjun Bijlani and Neha, Ankit Tiwari and Pallavi, Ankita Lokhande and Vicky Jain, Krishnamachari Srikkanth and Vidya Srikanth, and several others. During a media interaction, when asked about the show, he said,
This is the real test for us to judge how well we know each other on an intrinsic level and how consistent our compatibility meter really is. We are quite excited about our television venture as this will be the start of a new experiment for us beyond the online and content space.”
