‘Riverdale’ Star Mädchen Amick Wandered The Streets Of L.A. Looking For Bipolar Son

Riverdale actress Mädchen Amick shares the difficult story of her son Sly Alexis and her shocking Bipolar 1 diagnosis.

Mädchen Amick Considers Her Son ‘Normal’

Mädchen Amick and her husband David Alexis believe they are raising their child as respectfully and as normal as possible. “He is a normal kid and gets along well with the teachers and coaches,” he said Many people.

When Sly went to college, he realized that he was struggling. He started having problems with drugs and alcohol. “There’s a lot of delusional thinking,” when it comes to Amick’s son and his behavior.

“There was a lot of talk about things that didn’t make sense, and also, he would admit things like the phone was listening to him and the TV was watching him and very paranoid thoughts and feelings. Then just swing into mania, which will give him a larger-than-life personality.”

The actor received a distressing call from his son’s roommate one day, they panicked and were unsure of what to do at the moment, they couldn’t find him. He had left home without his cell phone and wallet.

“All of a sudden, the world was just pulled out from under him,” he recalls. “We got together as a family and we drove down from Los Angeles to the streets of Irvine to try to find him. It took hours, but we finally did it. He just walked down that street, really out of it.”

Amick said he received a phone call from his daughter Mina Tobias, 29, prompting him to move and help her son. Mina has studied to be a therapist and finds that something is “very wrong.”

They immediately contacted the hospital for guidance on the matter such as how they could approach Sly and the best tactics to help him.

Emergency Services Assumed He Was A Drug Addict

As with most authority figures who are called to the scene of someone with a mental health problem, things don’t go smoothly. “I tried to explain to the emergency personnel what was going on, and they just looked at him like any other kid on drugs,” Amick told the publication.

“But they brought him in overnight and they basically said, ‘He looks like he has an addiction problem. You have to deal with it as a family.’ They released him a few hours later, and we brought him home.”

Amick spent his best money on a treatment center that didn’t help his son. In 2012 she finally met a doctor and found a treatment center that could help her son. “That’s when they said, ‘This is not an addiction issue, this is a mental health issue.'”

She remembers being scared but happy that they finally had an answer. “As scary as it is, it’s actually a relief because now it has a name and there are some avenues to try to figure out what to do about it.”

Diagnosis Brings More Struggles

Amick shared that even after a correct diagnosis there is still a state of hopelessness. “There were a few times he felt like he wasn’t going to come and we were called to the hospital [for alcohol poisoning] basically saying goodbye,” said dad, David. “But he always fought to live and succeed.”
