RNC mulls crowning Trump ‘presumptive nominee’ after Iowa, New Hampshire wins

Members of the Republican National Committee are set to consider a proposal that would keep Donald Trump as the party’s “presumptive nominee” for president, The Post confirmed Thursday.

The resolution was introduced by David Bossie, an RNC committeeman from Maryland, a former deputy manager of Trump’s 2016 campaign, and comes as former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley continues to compete with the 45th president for the party’s endorsement.

“Resolved, The Republican National Committee hereby declares President Trump as our 2024 candidate for the office of President of the United States and from this time forward goes into full general election mode welcoming all supporters,” the resolution said.

Bossie’s pitch, first reported by The Dispatch, cited Trump’s victory in the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary and argued that “money spent from now on” would be better spent against President Biden.

Haley’s campaign was not impressed by the pre-emptive move.

“Who cares what the RNC says? We’re going to let millions of Republican voters across the country decide who should be our party’s nominee, not a bunch of Washington insiders,” campaign spokeswoman Olivia Perez-Cubas said.

“If [RNC Chairwoman] Ronna McDaniel wants to help so she can host a debate in South Carolina, unless she’s also worried that Trump can’t handle being on stage for 90 minutes with Nikki Haley.”

RNC spokesman Keith Schipper told The Post that Bossie’s proposal “will be taken up by the Resolutions Committee and they will decide whether to send this resolution to be voted on by the 168 members of the RNC at our annual meeting next week” in Las Vegas.

Schipper added that RNC members often propose resolutions and not all are adopted by the membership

RNC rules require a candidate to lock up 1,215 delegates to become the party’s standard bearer in a presidential election.

Trump won at least 20 of the 40 available delegates from Iowa following his nearly 30-point victory, and is poised to take at least 12 of New Hampshire’s 21 delegates following his 11-point victory in the Granite State, according to the latest data.

Haley is expected to get eight delegates from a third-place finish in Iowa and nine in New Hampshire.

While McDaniel is no longer calling for Haley to drop out of the race, he told Fox News Tuesday night that he doesn’t see how Haley can outrun Trump and win the nomination.

“I look at the math and the path forward, and I don’t see it for Nikki Haley,” he said at the time.

“There is a message coming out of the voters, which is very clear,” he added. “We need to unite around our candidate, which will be Donald Trump.”

Neither the Trump campaign nor Bossie immediately responded to requests for comment.

Bossie is also the chairman and president of Citizens United, a conservative advocacy group.
