Career

After completing his education, Rob Strasser returned to his hometown. He did so to establish his own law firm. He worked as a lawyer in Portland for the next several years. Blue Ribbon Sports (now Nike) launched a lawsuit against Onitsuka in 1972. Since the company imported running shoes, it partnered with Onitsuka to import Japanese goods. Nike founder Phil Knight eventually sued the Japanese company for breach of contract. To win the litigation, Knight hired Rob, and the corporation took off in 1974. Despite the fact that the corporation had audit and management problems the following year, they were eventually corrected. In fact, Rob was named marketing director after playing a key role in the success of the sports brand.

Nike became an independent US shoemaker after rebranding. Rob continued to market the brand’s products brilliantly, resulting in tremendous sales growth throughout the year. In fact, its revenue reached $100 million in 1978. Converse and Adidas led the basketball shoe industry in 1984, while Nike had a 17% market share. The company began to lose money and lay off workers. It chose to sign Michael Jordan, and Rob was instrumental in convincing him to sign even though he would have preferred to go to Adidas.

The ‘Air Jordan’ concept was a big factor in Jordan signing the deal with Nike. Jordan was punished for wearing shoes that were only 51% white. When Rob used these egregious NBA guidelines to sell products, Nike paid back the penalty. In the first year alone, the firm sold $162 million. Strasser is considered the man who saved Nike because of his many contributions to the company. As the corporation began to dominate in the United States, he moved to the Netherlands to take over Europe.

However, things didn’t stay that way forever, as he left Nike following recurring disputes with CEO Knight. Peter Moore went with him, and together they started a new consulting firm, Sports Inc. Later, he worked for Nike’s rival, Adidas, where he was CEO of Adidas America. When he took over the company, he moved it from New Jersey to Portland. However, he died in 1993.
