Robbie Lawler was born on March 20, 1982, in San Diego, California, United States. When Robbie was 10 years old, he moved to Bettendorf, Iowa, with his father and began his karate training. He attended Bettendorf High School and earned All-State honors in wrestling there. He met Pat Miletich when he was 16, and after graduating, he began training with Miletich Fighting System in 2000.

Robbie Lawler started his professional career in 2001. In his first match, he fought for IFC. Lawler won the first seven consecutive fights of his professional career, six of which were knockouts. He joined the UFC in 2002, starting with a 5-0 knockout over Aaron Riley.
