‘Rogue’ daycare workers busted for allegedly running child fight ring

Two South Carolina daycare teachers face multiple charges for allegedly ordering 3- and 4-year-old children in their care to fight each other and “allowing[ing] violence continues without correction,” the police said.

Kids Unlimited of Prosperity day care workers Ericka Jones, 27, and Serena Caldwell, 56, turned themselves in to authorities Thursday after warrants were issued for their arrest, according to the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office.

Both were charged with contributing to the delinquency of minors and unlawful conduct against a child, according to a department press release Friday.

Jones faces 14 counts on each count, while Caldwell faces 15.

Day care owner John David Dawkins wrote in a statement provided to local outlet WIS-TV that Jones and Caldwell were “immediately terminated” after staff reported their behavior and security footage was viewed.

The facility immediately notified the South Carolina Department of Social Services and the Newberry County Sheriff’s Department.

Sheriff Lee Foster told WLTX that the child care center has fully cooperated in their ongoing investigation.

Deputies found that the two women instructed the children to push, pull and hit each other, each store.

Foster told WLTX that the behavior “started with [Caldwell and Jones] say the teacher has promoted other students or other clients at the nursery, used violence to try to punish children or make other children obey.”

“I don’t know what the two nursery workers were thinking – it was just disgusting behaviour,” Foster continued. “I can’t imagine why you would do this.”

A total of 14 children were involved, Foster said – each WLTX between the ages of three and four.

Although no one suffered serious physical injuries, Foster said, it remains to be seen “how much emotional or psychological damage this could cause.”

A parent of one of the victims, who WLTX has not named, testified that their son was told to hit another child, then told to do it again.

Foster told WIS-TV that the two women were “rogue employees” and that the department did not believe the daycare was involved in their behavior.

A parent of one of the victims told the outlet that he did not believe that the problem was systemic and said that he “hated it[d] that these two women tarnish the name of this nursery.”

“But at the same time, I’m glad it was caught and they have to do justice. But at the end of the day, there’s no real justice because how do you get that out of a kid’s head? the woman asked. “You have changed their lives.”
