Rohman was born into a middle-class Sunni-Muslim family with roots in Jammu & Kashmir. Not much is known about his family other than his father Riyaz Shawl and his sister Nadia Shawl.
He first met Sushmita Sen at a Neeta Lulla fashion show in Mumbai. Putting the age gap at around 15 years, it was Rohman who first approached her and after dating for a few months, he proposed to Sushmita, which she accepted. The couple made their first public appearance together at Shilpa Shetty’s Diwali bash held in Mumbai.

At first, he always hid his age for some reason. I would keep asking him, ‘So, how old are you? You look so young.’ And he’d be like, ‘You guess!’ Then, when I realized how young he was, why didn’t he want that to get in the way of this conversation. So yeah, we didn’t really choose this, it was chosen for us. It was destined.”
