Kostomarov’s condition worsened after being transferred to a specialized hospital in Moscow. As a result, on February 6, 2023, Kostomarov underwent surgery to remove necrotic tissue and prevent future cell death. During the treatment, dead tissue from one leg was removed. However, the affected area was larger on the second leg, and the ankle was completely amputated. Due to the severity of his illness, both legs were removed after some time.

Kostomarov was put into a coma due to a stroke and a second brain bleed that affected his vision, as previously reported. The cold was diagnosed as pneumonia, affecting his health. He awoke from the coma after some time, but physicians reported minimal improvement. Hopefully the Olympic winner will feel better soon and be able to share his experience with the world.
