Ron DeSantis blisters Trump’s Republican debate absence: ‘Missing in action’

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis blocked the absence of former President Donald Trump’s debate on Wednesday evening.

“Where’s Joe Biden? He is completely missing in action from leadership, and you know who else is missing in action: Donald Trump,” DeSantis admonished.

DeSantis’ dig came during a riff on the ongoing government shutdown fight in Washington, DC.

In the months leading up to the 2024 campaign, DeSantis was relatively restrained in the face of Trump’s constant stream of slings and arrows.

But on Wednesday, the governor took off the gloves.

“[Trump] should be on this stage tonight. He owes it to you to defend his record, where they added $7.8 trillion to the debt that set the stage for the inflation we have,” DeSantis said.

Florida’s governor crowed about how he’s running a budget surplus in the Sunshine State, vetoing “wasteful spending” and “paying down over 25% of our state’s debt.”

Trump skipped the second GOP debate as he did the first, citing his strong lead in the polls.

The 77-year-old former president has a 42.2 percentage point lead over DeSantis, his closest rival, according to the latest RealClearPolitics aggregate.

As the top vote-getter to participate in Wednesday’s debate, DeSantis was placed center stage at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, Calif.

DeSantis also blamed politicians in Washington for the shutdown dispute and deeper problems with the economy.

“People in Washington are shutting down the American dream with their reckless behavior,” he said. “They borrowed, they printed what they spent and now you’re paying more for everything.”
