Ron DeSantis, Nikki Haley grapple blizzard conditions, slam absent Trump on eve of Iowa caucus vote

Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley clashed with Republican front-runner Donald Trump in Iowa Saturday as they battled blizzard conditions and sub-zero temperatures — while awaiting closely watched poll results that could signal which one will take second place in Monday’s key caucuses .

Trump “thinks you’re stupid,” DeSantis told voters in Council Bluffs, Iowa, saying the former president was trying to “educate” them about his response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Donald Trump once boasted that he was closing the world’s largest economy. He said he shut it down and he saved all these lives,” the Florida governor said. “Now he’s saying the opposite” — pointing to a Fox News town hall this week where Trump told a revised version of 2020 events.

“He doesn’t think you can realize what he’s saying is completely false,” DeSantis claimed.

In Cedar Falls, Iowa, Haley called Trump an agent of “chaos.”

“I think President Trump is the right president at the right time,” said the former UN ambassador. “But right or wrong, chaos follows.”

Haley cited national polls to promote herself as the Republican most likely to defeat President Biden in the November general election.

“Republicans have lost the last seven of the eight popular votes for president, and that’s nothing to be proud of,” he said. “The only way we’re going to win over the majority of Americans is if we go forward with a new generation of conservative leaders and leave the negativity and burdens behind.”

The RealClearPolitics polling average shows Trump with 53% support among Iowa Republicans, with Haley at 17.8% and DeSantis at 15.5%.

But turnout at Monday’s hours-long caucus – which requires voters to participate in person – could be severely affected by weather conditions, with up to a foot of snow on the ground and temperatures expected to drop to 10 below zero across the state.
