Ron DeSantis rips Trump for saying Civil War ‘could have been negotiated’

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis blasted former President Donald Trump on Monday after the 2024 Republican front-runner suggested over the weekend that a Civil War could be avoided through mediation.

At a rally in Newton, Iowa on Saturday, Trump said he found the conflict “interesting”, but lamented the high death toll of at least 620,000 troops.

“Many mistakes were made. Look, there’s something I think is negotiable, to be honest with you,” said the 77-year-old. “I think you can negotiate about that. Everyone died, so many people died.”

“I don’t even know what he’s talking about,” DeSantis told reporters Monday. according to ABC News reporter Rachel Scott.

“Lincoln did what he had to do,” DeSantis added. “He ended up ushering in the abolition of slavery and he saved the Union.

“Letting go of that makes no sense to me.”

In late December, former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley sparked controversy when she did not say slavery was the main cause of the Civil War in response to questions at a New Hampshire town hall.

When Haley’s interrogators pointed out the omission, the candidate responded, “What do you want me to say about slavery?” before moving on to another topic.

Haley then explained that “of course” the Civil War was about slavery and reflected that she should have given a different answer.

His competitors, including DeSantis, slammed him for the offense.

“When he faces any kind of scrutiny, he tends to cave,” DeSantis admonished at the time. “The Republican Party was established to stop the growth of slavery in this country. And the abolition of slavery was – and to this day, remains – the highest achievement of the party.”

The Trump campaign quickly attacked DeSantis Monday in response to the Florida governor.

“Ron DeSantis just proved how unprepared and weak he is as president, which is why he polled a distant third,” spokesman Steven Cheung told The Post without further comment.

The Sunshine State Republican also indicated that he plans to stay in the 2024 GOP race for the long haul, despite rumors he will drop out if he does poorly in Iowa.

DeSantis’ the team has confirmed that the rumours was planted by Trump allies.

“That’s a lie, completely fabricated,” DeSantis said Monday. “Who said that? No one said that. We already have a plan. We have committed to a debate in New Hampshire, at least one televised town hall in New Hampshire.”
