Controversial comedian Roseanne Barr recently revealed that being fired from the revival of her show, “Roseanne,” surprised her.
Although the writer named the ABC sitcom after him, he felt useless after being fired and even considered suicide. However, the firing followed racist tweets he shared about Valerie Jarrett, an adviser to former President Barack Obama.
Amid the controversy, Barr said she also feels underappreciated, given how much she has contributed to “Roseanne.” Although the actress says she is now in a better place, the dismissal affected her mental health.

In an interview with Los Angeles Times, Barr revealed that it took a long time to bounce back. After being fired from the revival in 2018, Barr said she was depressed and claimed that her former colleagues wanted her to “kill herself”.
As far as she knows, killing off her Roseanne character means they don’t care about her mental health. Although the “She-Devil” star is feeling better now, it was a very dark and scary time for her. “I have survived. I have come out on the other side, finally. But it burns the wizard. And it was very scary.”
During an interview promoting his upcoming special “Cancel This!” Barr also stated that she felt left out and unappreciated. The firing of “Roseanne” followed her controversial tweet insulting Valerie Jarrett, a former senior adviser to the President of the United States. The tweet read, “Muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes have a baby=vj.”
Following the abrupt end of the “Roseanne” revival, a new spin-off titled “The Conners” debuted in 2018 without the character. The show is currently in its fifth season.
Roseanne Barr Says Scandal Cost Her Some Chances
The “Master of the Good Name” actor revealed that he “lost everything” after the dismissal. The star recalled feeling alone during the controversy when some of her friends turned against her. Barr also stated that the scandal affected her chances with other comedians such as Dave Chappelle.
Describing what it was like, he said, “I guess you would call it a dark night of the soul. I felt like the devil himself attacked me to try to divide me, to punish me for believing in God.” The star also revealed that he barely got a chance to apologize for the tweet.
Amidst the controversy, Barr was devastated that her former colleagues agreed to work on the new show without her. “I’m the only person… whose life’s work was stolen, stolen by people I thought loved me.” Although she felt betrayed by her former co-stars, she later forgave them.
He Forgives His Former Cast Members
The comedian said he felt betrayed after his former colleagues Laurie Metcalf, John Goodman, and Sara Gilbert agreed to star in the spin-off, “The Conners.” It was disappointing that they decided to “kill off” his character and work on the show without him.
He said, “They tarnished my contribution to television and the show itself.” However, the star found it in his heart to forgive them and wish them well. He stated, “I forgave everyone. I began to think that God took me out of there to save me.”
Roseanne Barr Struggles With Mental Issues
Barr spoke about her struggles with mental illness in a 2001 interview with Esquire. At the time, he revealed that he suffered from Multiple Personality Disorder (now called Dissociative Identity Disorder.) In response to whether he had control over them, he revealed that he was getting used to it.
He explained, “I’m always conflicted about the conflicting parts, but I’ve learned how to make them listen to each other now.” Barr also noted that the personality is more cooperative now than in 1994, when he first went public with the disease.
He said, “I have learned how to tell them that they are on the same team, that we occupy the same body, which we never knew before.” Following the news that she would not be appearing on “The Conners,” Barr issued a statement apologizing to those affected by her “stupid tweet.”
