Russell M Nelson was born into a Mormon family in Salt Lake City in the decade following World War I. As a result, his upbringing was very religious and conservative. He completed the four-year MD program at the University of Utah in just three years, ranking first in his class. After that, he went to the University of Minnesota and participated in the world’s first open-heart surgery using cardiopulmonary bypass. For his contribution, he was awarded a Ph.D. He then served in the army as a Medical Corpsman for 20 months before retiring as a Captain.

He returned and spent a year at Massachusetts General Hospital. He joined the faculty of the University of Utah School of Medicine in 1955. He was a legendary surgeon in Utah, performing open heart surgery, thoracic surgery and the first pediatric surgery in the state. He performed many extraordinary procedures and was honored by being appointed president of the Society of Vascular Surgery in 1975. He was also a professor emeritus.

Over the years, he also served as a leader of the LDS Church in various spells. The church often asked for his advice as an apostle or consultant. He was the main delegate to the Parliament on World Religions in 1991. He traveled all over the world to preach and distribute charity. With the death of former President Monson on January 2, 2018, he assumed the presidency of the Church.
