Russia shot down nearly three dozen drones in Kyiv early Sunday, with explosions echoing throughout the Ukrainian capital and surrounding regions for about two hours and debris falling across several city districts, Ukrainian officials said.
Ukraine’s air force said it destroyed 26 of the 33 drones launched by Russia, all targeting Kyiv and surrounding regions.
Reuters witnesses heard at least five explosions across Kyiv, where the night sky was lit up by blasts from air defenses that engaged targets.
A plume of smoke rose from the cracks of the building.
Kyiv resident Liudmyla said she heard the sound of an Iranian-made drone before the blast wave shattered windows in her building and jars on her windowsill.
“It was a very scary experience – I can’t put it into words.”
Debris from the downed drone fell in five different districts, said Mayor Vitali Klitschko and the city’s military administration.

Klitschko said one person had been injured.
State emergency services later reported that debris had fallen in three counties but there was no serious damage.
Kyiv regional governor Ruslan Kravchenko wrote on Facebook that unspecified infrastructure facilities and eight houses were damaged as a result of the overnight strike.
There was no immediate comment from Russia on the attack.
Moscow has carried out periodic airstrikes on Ukrainian population centers far from the eastern and southern frontlines during its 18-month-old invasion.
A Russian attack killed 17 people on Wednesday in the eastern town of Kostiantynivka, Ukrainian officials said.
