Russia increasing efforts to shut down Ukraine’s access to Elon Musk’s Starlink satellites

Russia is stepping up efforts to cut off Ukraine’s access to Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite, according to a report.

During the nearly two-year conflict, the Russian military has tried to prevent Ukraine from accessing satellites by installing jammers on its tanks to disrupt signals and interfere with exploding drones, according to a Business Insider report.

The jamming of Ukrainian satellites has forced the military to move closer to their targets on the front lines of the war, which begins in February 2022.

The satellite was crucial to Ukraine’s survival during the conflict.

Satellite internet has enabled soldiers to communicate effectively on the front lines and also allowed Ukrainian businesses to operate during the conflict, the news site reported.

“Russia really wants to find a way to deny Ukraine’s use of Starlink,” Brian Weeden, chief program officer for the nonprofit Secure World Foundation told Business Insider. “But that’s easier said than done because of the constellation’s architecture.”

A biography written about the billionaire last year sparked controversy when it said Musk shut down Ukraine’s access to Starlink amid efforts to use submarine drones to attack Russian ships in Crimea.

In fact, the reach of the system has not reached the territory occupied by Russia since 2014.

Ukraine had asked Musk to allow the use of the system there, but he refused because he thought it would escalate the war.
