Russia moves jailed Putin adversary Alexei Navalny to Arctic penal colony, spokeswoman says

Imprisoned Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny has been moved to a prison colony in Russia’s northern Arctic region, his spokesman said on Monday after supporters lost contact with him for more than two weeks.

Navalny was traced to the IK-3 prison colony in Kharp in the Yamal-Nenets region, about 1,200 miles northeast of Moscow, spokeswoman Kira Yarmysh said.

Navalny’s lawyers managed to reach him on Monday, Yarmysh said.

Allies of Navalny, who has been preparing for an expected transfer to a “special regime” colony, the toughest grade in the Russian prison system, said he had not been seen by his lawyer since December 6, raising concerns about his fate.

“Many thanks to our supporters, activists, journalists and media who are concerned about Alexei’s fate and who never tire of writing about the situation,” said Navalny’s lawyer, Ivan Zhdanov.

Zhdanov said his supporters sent 618 requests for information on the location of Navalny, who has been held in a prison colony 145 miles east of Moscow.
