Russian drones kill 7 people, including 3 children, in Ukraine’s Kharkiv

Russia launched a drone strike in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, killing seven people, including three small children, sparking fires and damaging infrastructure and residential homes, regional officials said on Saturday.

Oleh Synehubov, the governor of Kharkiv region, said Russian troops attacked the city late Friday, hitting civilian infrastructure, causing several large fires, and damaging at least 15 residential houses in eastern Kharkiv.

“As a result of the strike, seven people died, among them three children: seven, four years old, and a baby about six months old,” he said in the Telegram messaging application.

Three people were injured, he said.

Ukraine’s air force said that its air defense and mobile drone hunter groups shot down 23 of the 31 drones launched by Russia, which targeted the Kharkiv region in the country’s northeast and the Odesa region in the south.

In Kharkiv, the head of the local prosecutor’s office, Oleksandr Filchakov, said in a video posted on Telegram that three drones hit a gas station in the city’s Nemyshlianskyi district.

“There was a lot of fuel and that’s why there were terrible consequences from this fire,” Filchakov said.

Synehubov also said that a Russian drone hit a restaurant in the small town of Velykyi Berluk, about 62 miles from Kharkiv.

He reported no casualties there.

Reuters could not independently confirm details of the attack.

Russia did not immediately respond to a request for comment but said it had not intentionally targeted public sites.
