Last October, cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed and director Joel Souza was injured when a gun held by actor Alec Baldwin discharged on the set of “Rust.”
The Ukrainian cinematographer, who died at the age of 42, is survived by a husband, Matthew Hutchins, and a son. He has worked on more than thirty feature films, short films, and TV miniseries. On Wednesday, it was reported that a documentary will be made about his life.
How Does Halyna Hutchins’ ‘Rust’ Cinematography Family Feel About The Documentary?

A feature film about his life is being produced by Story Syndicate, which will explore his life, his famous works, and his sudden death on the set of a Western in New Mexico. According to Deadline, which first reported the news, the documentary has the “full support” of Matt Hutchins.
Emmy-nominated director Rachel Mason is reportedly directing the film, with Julee Metz tapped to produce the film. Not many details about the film have been released; currently, it is reported that the documentary does not yet have a title.

Story Syndicate has reportedly been granted “exclusive access” to some of Halyna’s personal and professional archives to tell the story of her life, which begins on a remote Soviet naval base. The aspiring filmmaker then moved to Kyiv, Ukraine, where he began working on independent films to critical acclaim.
It is unclear how much the documentary will focus on his sudden death or the journey to complete the film. Although the Hutchins family filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against Alec Baldwin and other “Rust” producers in February, they settled earlier this year. As part of the settlement, Matt Hutchins has been added as an executive producer on the film, which will resume shooting in January 2023. The original cast is expected to return, although producers are scouting locations in California to continue shooting the film.
‘The world lost a great artist, but I lost a friend’

“Circus of Books” filmmaker Rachel Mason made a touching statement to Deadline about the documentary. “Halyna is on the cusp of making a lasting mark on cinema. As a filmmaker, I want to make a film with her. I never imagined that I would make a film about her,” said Mason. “The world lost a great artist, but I lost a friend.”
“The fact that his brilliance as an artist was immediately overshadowed by the circumstances surrounding his death hurts me deeply,” he continued. “This film gives us the opportunity to share his humanity and talent with the world, as well as experience the journey of his colleagues who worked to complete his final creative work. Halyna was destined to be great, and she still is.”

Producer Julee Metz added, “Halyna and I work in the same industry and share a passion for storytelling, but what binds us as friends is motherhood. Our family became very close over the years and when the unimaginable happened, I knew I had to pay tribute to Halyna by telling her incredible story in the fullest way possible.”
“Rachel and I are thrilled to be working with Story Syndicate to make this vision a reality, and we’re honored that Matt Hutchins has entrusted us with his story,” added Metz.
Alec Baldwin Files New Lawsuit Against ‘Rust’ Crew

Although Alec Baldwin settled his wrongful death lawsuit with the family of Halyna Hutchins, he turned around and filed a lawsuit against some of the “Rust” crew on Friday, November 11.
The negligence and damages lawsuit names “Rust” armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, first assistant director David Halls, real estate magnate Sarah Zachry, and gun and ammunition supplier Seth Kenney — and his company — as defendants (via Deadline).

In a counter-complaint from Baldwin’s attorney, Luke Nikas, the “Boss Baby” actor blames the crew for failing to check the gun for live ammunition. The complaint reads, “This tragedy occurred because live ammunition was delivered to the set and inserted into the gun, Gutierrez-Reed failed to carefully inspect the ammunition or the gun, Halls failed to thoroughly inspect the gun yet announced the gun was safe beforehand. handed it to Baldwin, and Zachry failed to disclose that Gutierrez-Reed had acted recklessly off set and was a safety risk to those around him.”

No one has yet been criminally charged in Halyna Hutchins’ death, although the Santa Fe police department has completed its investigation and submitted the report to the District Attorney for review.
