Even though actor Alec Baldwin and “Rust” shield Hannah Gutierrez-Reed face criminal charges in the October 2021 death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, the show must go on.
Most of the original cast and crew members will return, but it appears production plans to add other actors to the set as filming moves from New Mexico to Montana.
‘Rust’ Seeks New Cast As Production Resumes In Montana Next Month

On Thursday evening, Deadline was one of the first to report that the producers of “Rust” were looking for a new cast. Despite several lawsuits alleging safety concerns and negligence on set, producers still hope they will be able to find a new child actor before production begins next month.
The new “Rust” production, which omits the scene leading up to Halyna Hutchins’ death, now stars a deaf boy. Jacob Hollister’s character is a supporting role, with the description calling him “a smart, sweet little boy who knows nothing about the world other than what his older sister Lucas has created for him. Lucas is everything Jacob has in the world.”

Producers are looking for a “white boy” between “6 to 7 years old” to play the role, which is scheduled to start on April 23. It’s the first start date that has been made public since the production planned to begin filming in January this year after scouting locations in California.
Things took a turn for the worse when criminal charges were announced against Alec Baldwin and “Rust” actress Hannah Gutierrez-Reed that same month. Production was moved to Montana, at the Yellowstone Film Ranch. Baldwin is expected to resume filming scenes for his role in the film, despite the criminal charges against him.
Preliminary Hearings For Baldwin And Gutierrez-Reed Begin On May 3rd

If he and Hannah Gutierrez-Reed are found guilty of the charges, they could each face up to 18 months in prison and multiple fines. Although the Western is expected to resume production in April, a preliminary hearing is scheduled to begin on May 3, with New Mexico Judge Mary Marlow Sommer presiding.
Although GOP appointee and special prosecutor Andrea Reeb has stepped down from her position in the trial, Santa Fe District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies will present evidence and call witnesses from a finalized list to be drawn up in late April. The list, which has been amended five times, includes Halyna Hutchins’ widow, Matthew Hutchins, and first assistant director David Halls, who pleaded guilty to charges of negligent use of a firearm.

In a statement, Reeb said, “After much consideration, I have made the difficult decision to resign as special prosecutor in the Rust case. My priority in this case – and in every case I’ve been prosecuted in my 25-year career – is justice for the victims.”
“However, it has become clear that the best way I can ensure justice is served in this case is to step back so that the prosecution can focus on the evidence and facts, which clearly demonstrate a complete disregard for basic safety protocols that led to the death of Halyna Hutchins,” he added. “I will not allow questions about my service as a legislator and prosecutor to obscure the real issues.”
Alec Baldwin Pleads ‘Not Guilty’ to Murder Charges

Although the trial was originally scheduled for February 24, the “30 Rock” actor skipped it by deciding to plead guilty instead.
In a legal document filed in court, Baldwin’s lead attorney Luke Nikas wrote, “I hereby certify that I have explained to Mr. Baldwin his right to appear in person in District Court to enter a plea of Not Guilty and his rights have been explained to him. by the judge and I am satisfied that Mr. Baldwin understands this waiver.”

Nikas previously issued a statement condemning the charges against Baldwin, saying, “This verdict distorts the tragic death of Halyna Hutchins and represents a horrific miscarriage of justice. Mr. Baldwin had no reason to believe there were live rounds in the gun — or anywhere else on the film set.”
“He relied on the professionals he worked with, who assured him the gun had no live ammunition,” Nikas added. “We will fight these charges, and we will win.”

Hannah Gutierrez-Reed has yet to enter a plea. However, her lawyer, Jason Bowles, released a statement at the time the charges were announced, saying, “Hannah is, and always has been, very emotional and sad about this tragic accident. But he didn’t commit an involuntary manslaughter.”
“These allegations are the result of a deeply flawed investigation, and an inaccurate understanding of the full facts,” Bowles added. “We intend to reveal the full truth and believe Hannah will be acquitted by a jury.”
