Career
Director
Bhagavan paved the way for acting by joining the theater group, Hirannaiah Mitra Mandali. In 1956, he worked as an assistant director to Kannada film writer Kanagal Prabhakara Shastry for the film Bhagyodaya. In 1967, he directed the Kannada film Rajadurgada Rahasya with AC Narasimha Murthy.
Later, he teamed up with director B. Dorairaj and formed the Dorai-Bhagavan duo. Dorai-Bhagavan is known for directing many blockbuster Kannada films including Kasturi Nivasa (1971), Eradu Kanasu (1974), Bayaludaari (1977), Chandanada Gombe (1979), Gaalimaatu (1981), Hosa Belaku (1982), and Benkiya Bale (1983). ).
The duo also directed James Bond-style films such as Goa Dalli CID 999 (1968), Operation Jackpot Nalli CID 999 (1969), and Operation Diamond Racket (1978). The duo’s last film was Baalondu Chaduranga (1995), starring Saikumar and Sudharani. In 2019, Bhagavan made a comeback and directed his 50th film ‘Aaduva Gombe,’ starring Sanchari Vijay and Anant Nag.
Actor
Bhagavan has appeared in several Kannada films including Hosabelaku, Bhagyodaya, Mangalasootra, Vasantha Geetha, Haalu Jenu, Jeevana Chaithra, and Bangalore Mail. In 2016, he was featured in a show titled #BoooMyShow, which premiered on YouTube.
Award
In 2017, he was awarded with the Dadasaheb Phalke Academy Award.
Death
In December 2022, he was hospitalized due to old age. On 20 February 2023, he died in Bengaluru.
