Saba Azad was born Saba Singh Grewal on 1 November 1990 (age 31 years; in 2021) in Delhi, India. He was interested in dance and acting since childhood and after school, he started his journey as a theater artist to pursue a career in acting. He is the nephew of Safdar Hashmi, a great street theater artist and director. Influenced by theater since childhood, he grew up studying theater and even performed with Safdar Hashmi’s theater group, Jana Natya Manch. She is professionally trained in several dance forms such as Odissi, classical ballet, jazz, Latin and more. He traveled with Kiran Segal, his Odissi teacher, to perform not only in India, but in Canada, Nepal, and England as well. Over the years, Saba has done several TV commercials for brands like Cadbury, Maggi, Tata Sky, Google, Vodafone, Nescafe and many more. His journey to cinema began when he landed the lead role in the short film “Guroor” directed by Ishaan Nair.

After entering the Indian film industry, Saba Azad met Imaad Shah, the son of actors Naseeruddin Shah and Ratna Pathak Shah. They both have similar interests, and this common ground helped them to come together and in 2013, Imaad Shah confirmed that they have been living together for the past year.
In January 2022, she was seen with Bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan as speculations about her being the Bollywood star’s secret girlfriend started doing the rounds.
Career
As an Actor
After she completed her schooling, Saba started her acting career as a theater artist from where she got the lead role in the short film “Guroor,” directed by Ishaan Nair. His Bollywood debut happened when he got a role in the movie “Dil Kabbadi” (2008) as Raga. After this, she got the lead role in the movie “Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge” (2011) as Preity Sen. In 2010, he started his own theater company, “The Skins” and directed his first play “Lovepuke” (2010).
As a Musician
In 2012, working with Imaad Shah, he started his indie electronic band “Madboy/Mink.” With his band gaining popularity among the youth, Saba also recorded several songs for several Bollywood films, such as “Nautanki Saala” (2013) where he recorded the songs, “Dhak Dhak Karne Laga” and “Dil Ki Toh Lag Gayi.” He lent his voice in “Dhoom Anthem” (2013). He is also famous for the songs, “Calcutta Kiss” in Byomkesh Bakshy’s movie Detective! (2015), “Neend Na Mujhko Aaye” in the movie Shaandaar (2015), “Dekhe Meri Aankhon Mein Jo” in the movie Main Aur Charles (2015), “Bhar De Hamaare Glass” in the movie Karwaan (2018) and “Nakhrewaali” in movie Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota (2019).
Controversy
- On 26 March 2017, Saba uploaded a picture on her Instagram where she mentioned that her original name was Saba Singh Grewal, but she chose to change her name to Saba Azad. He does this to feel free from all the tags given to people, by people. He was bashed by people on social media for changing his name.
- Saba Azad performs at the anti-CAA protest that took place in January 2020 at Shaheen Bagh, New Delhi. He sang the People’s Theater Association of India’s song, “Tu Zinda Hai.” He also recited a poem by Faiz Ahmad Faiz, “Bol Ke Lab Azad Hain Tere.” Later, a social media post went viral claiming that the protest was held to celebrate the migration of Kashmiri Pandits from Jammu & Kashmir, and Saba Azad was criticized for her participation in the protest.

- Saba almost cried when she was shooting for “Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge” as she was asked to cut her hair short for Preity Sen’s character.
- Saba is a big foodie and she often posts pictures of the things she eats on her Instagram. Some of his favorite foods are eggs, salmon and Khasi Thali (a Meghalaya delicacy). She likes to dance and travel.
- He also enjoys traveling and likes to attend music festivals around the world.
- The story behind their group name “Madboy/Mink” is that Imaad was given the name Madboy by his friends, and Saba got this nickname from his favorite music producer, Samrat B.
